How to Detect a Water Leakage on Your Roof

Water Leakage

With the weather getting colder and the days shorter, it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll repair your roof this winter. Not many people do that until it gets too cold for them to stay warm inside, but you’re different — you’re a proactive person and have started researching now. That decision will not go unrewarded with a new home or business that is secure against inclement weather.

Several ways to detect moisture

To detect a leakage you can use several tools like:

1. Moisture Detectors

This is probably the most reliable (and expensive) way to figure out where your moisture problem is coming from. Moisture detectors are electronic devices that measure the amount of moisture in the air and can actually tell you when there’s a leak inside your walls. They’re commonly used in basements to detect water problems before they happen, but they can also pinpoint where water is entering from above.

You just place the detector on a wall and wait for it to click. The faster it clicks, the more moisture it senses (between 1-4 clicks per minute is normal). If you hear it click, you can use a moisture meter to get a more accurate reading of where the moisture is coming from.

2. Moisture Meters

A moisture meter measures the amount of moisture in your walls or ceilings by using a metal probe that zaps electrical currents through walls. The electric current takes 20 minutes to make it through your wall and back (8 minutes for drywall and 12-18 minutes for concrete) and can tell you how much moisture is in the wall along the way. If your probe comes back with a lot of moisture, then there’s a high probability that you have a leak somewhere inside the wall.

3. Infrared Cameras

If your home is already damaged by water, then you may have to resort to an infrared camera. This is a camera that detects heat signatures on your walls and displays them on a monitor. You can look at the monitor to see where the heat signatures are hot (indicating moisture), which may help you identify where any leaks are coming from. The major downside of this method is that you need damaged walls for it to work. If you don’t have damage, then the infrared camera won’t show you anything.

Conclusion

The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that there are no leaks around the house. You should check any pipes, sinks and toilets for leaks. You can also make a pot of rice and place it on the ceiling, this way if you see water dripping from the ceiling then there is a leak in your bathroom or kitchen. You can also check the attic by opening up your garage door and climbing up into the attic space.

If there doesn’t seem to be any detectable leaks around your home then you should inspect under your sink because this is where most water drains go out of, they’re either plugged or they are leaking. You can test for leakage by looking at the baseboards around this area as well as placing
